Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesia is concerned with anaesthetics, resuscitation and pain relief. With anaesthesia in the true sense of the term, sensations in a part of the body (local or regional anaesthesia) or the whole body (general anaesthesia) are suppressed by means of medicines. In most cases, anaesthesia is given to facilitate surgical procedures.

At the preoperative visit, the anaesthetist establishes the appropriate anaesthetic procedure for the patient concerned and the scheduled operation. The usual anaesthetic techniques include epidural, peridural, spinal and general anaesthesia. During the operation itself, the anaesthetist monitors the patient‘s vital functions and in the postoperative phase he ensures the patient‘s recovery and pain relief.
